Speaking and Writing the Flesh: Language and the Practice of Phenomenology
David Abram
Our live bodies are channels of biotic energy, and phenomenology is well poised to awaken awareness of this fact. Tuning us into animal vitality, phenomenology and its methodological cousin, hermeneutics, also set the stage for an assessment of zootic animacy’s worth. This evaluation brings with it an animal-appreciative ethos that can help guide our cross-species concerns and ecological endeavors.
Living, Longing, and Being on the Breath of Limbs: A performative exploration of the body as inquiry
Response by Celeste Snowber
This performative presentation explores a visceral and poetic perspective to integrating the body as a place of inquiry and discovery. I
will explore how a connection to the language of the body has the possibilities to tap into places of mystery and longing, insight and
inspiration. Integration of body stories, movement, writing from the body and connections to what it means to connect our humanity, humor and humility will be explored from a phenomenological perspective. I will integrate dance, poetry and comedy within my
lecture as a way of modeling a phenomenology of flesh and as both a performer and scholar I seek to respond with all my limbs to a phenomenology of flesh.
